Frozen Boulders in Innocent Field
Two forms are situated in a bright springtime field. Their frozen self-protectiveness begins to break apart. The warmth of the field, coupled with the fracturing of the forms, suggest that beneath the surface healing has already stirred. Yet, the spikiness of the grass suggests emotional complexity in this naive playful field.
I felt upset and even cried while making this piece. Then, when a cheerful, childlike image emerged from my distress – it really irritated me! I wanted the artwork to reflect my mood and be dark and melancholy instead. My anger provoked me to cut it up. Then, when rearranging the drawing, I essentially switched just one piece; but the understated change settled and integrated both art and emotion. This drawing was the first that I reconfigured. Its success inspired me to revisit and remedy earlier problematic work.
